About the Mayan Riviera
The Mayan Riviera is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of
Quintana Roo - one of Mexico's youngest states. Bordered by Belize in the
south and the states of Campeche and Yucatan to the west and northwest.

South of Cancun is Highway 307 which runs parallel to the sea. This 160 km
of coastline and highway is the Riviera Maya. A miraculous land with an
abundance of flora and fauna and every turn off of the highway leading to a
new and exciting adventure. Explore long stretches of pristine white
beaches, archeological sites, fascinating ecological parks or the colorful
Mayan communities along this stretch of highway.

In the late 1990's the Riviera Maya was introduced worldwide as the perfect

alternative for travelers eager to explore beyond their hotel rooms. This incredibly beautiful destination has
become the ideal spot for cultural and adventure tourism. It is one of the most frequently visited beach
destinations in the world.

The coast of Quintana Roo is bathed by shallow crystal-clear, blue-green waters lined by white beaches of
powdered coral. The palancar reef that passes outside the bay is part of the biggest living reef in the Western
Hemisphere. It is punctuated by numerous coves, lagoons and cenotes with a backdrop of lush tropical
vegetation. It does not have a single above ground river, rather it is criss-crossed by a network of
underground rivers and caves.

Originally the peninsula was under the ocean and what once was the ocean floor is now the region's
limestone foundation. Surface water seeps through the porous limestone and will dissolve the softer rock
beneath the surface and creates caverns. These caverns over thousands of years will erode and collapse to
form the cenotes.

Cenotes vary in size and depth and are great to cool off or snorkel in. You do have to be open water certified
scuba dive in them with a certified cave diver as a guide. There is usually a small fee to pay for entrance to the
various cenotes on private property. The rental property "Azul Riviera" has it's own private cenote that is full
of beautiful tropical fish and also is right on the Yalku Lagoon. Also at Casa Cenote there is a free cenote.

There are plenty of reefs, jungle areas, and sacred Mayan ruins all within easy access from Azul Water Villa's
properties. In this magical setting you will forget all else and succumb to the unforgettable sights and sounds
of the Riviera Maya. You will find friendly locals, quiet beaches and plenty of things to do.

The Riviera boasts of miles of sandy palm lined beaches, bordered by the sapphire blue waters of the
Caribbean. Coral reefs, underwater caves, shipwrecks of long ago, exotic tropical fish and turtles can be
experienced by all.  Whether you fancy snorkeling or scuba diving you will be impressed by these underwater
sights.

All of the communities along the Riviera Maya offer a plethora of dining and shopping choices to meet any
budget or taste. You can delight in a tranquil serene atmosphere and a romantic dinner on the beach or take
in some of the sights and sounds at a local restaurant. You will enjoy shopping from around the world and
many crafts by local artisans.
