The Mayan Riviera is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo.
Akumal was first discovered in the early 1500's when a Spanish galleon traveling to the West Indies crashed on the reefs near Jamaica and the sailors washed up on the shores of Akumal after drifting for several weeks in the ship's long boat.
Cozumel is surrounded by some of the most beautiful reefs on the planet and some of the world's most challenging wall diving sites. The most densely populated area is the west side of the island which faces the mainland with its calm Caribbean ocean currents. Just on the other side of the island you will find a rocky shoreline and strong waves that pound in from the Atlantic.
With Cancun's reputation for being party central its hard to see some of the other things it has to offer. This city is truly a tourist paradise. There is such a gastronomic variety here you must take this opportunity to savor some of the local specialties - you may never have the opportunity to again.
In Pre-Columbian times the island was sacred to the Mayan moon goddess, Ix Chel. When the Spanish arrived here in the 16th century they named it "Isla Mujeres" meaning "Island of Women" because of the many cult images of the moon goddess here.
Tourist activity in Playa del Carmen centers on Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, stretching from calle 1 norte until calle 34, a pedestrian walkway located just one block inland from the beach which is lined with boutique hotels, shops, bars, and restaurants.
The heart of Puerto Aventuras is the dolphin enclosure where Dolphin Discovery, offers tourists the opportunity to swim with dolphins and other creatures. This area is encircled by shops and restaurants.
Soliman Bay  is a  bay protected by coral reef. It is perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. There are also walking trails here which meander through mangroves and offer some of the best birdwatching around. This area has become very popular over the last few years and construction has been booming. Where, not too long ago, there was an almost empty bay, there are now lovely full furnished and luxurious  villas all over the shore.
Tulum, is now divided into three main areas: the archaeological site, the pueblo (or town), and the zona hotelera (or hotel zone).
